Intro
Animal lovers find it's hard to connect with each other because pet-related topics are scattered all over the internet. Pet Pet is a platform where people own pet(s) or loving pets can find each other effectively and connect to social offline.
Challenge One
What information architecture is effective for pet owners to use to solve current pain points--useful information scattered everywhere around internet.
Solution 1
Define different use cases:
Case 1: Sam wants to find pet lovers to foster cat when he is on travel because it's hard to carry pets on public tranportation in China.
Case 2: Yolanda wants to find someone who also loves dog to go camping together and share equipments burden.
Case 3: Kelly can't afford a pet right now but wants to know suggestions from true pet owners online.
Solution 2
Create a clear site map that conclude all use cases and provide a strong hierarchy for users to navigate through.
Solution 3
Create possibilities beyond just solve problems, but improve the social-good to connect like minded people.
Challenge TWO
What level of personality exposure is safe enough for social but attractive enough to show characters?
Solution 1
Emphasize owned/ loved pets to be the main focus of the profile instead of a personal photo. Limit the possibility of leaking personal information or distraction caused by bias with virtual avatars.
Solution 2
Customize characters to show interest and personality in the "Hub". Attract like-minded people through content creation, lifestyle sharing, pet owned/ loved, etc.
Takeaways
It is easy to tend to 3d characters in design and it might be very attractive. However, after talking with front-end engineers, the works needed behind this idea is huge. Then I realized that it is hard for a small size project which aims to build core features at first version to cover all the cost.
So the final compromise for this idea is to use free open source psd files to provide user some level of customization but keep the character as a image instead of building a model at this stage.
